Glacial Adventure
To experience the pristine beauti og the glacier,
take an organized expedition onto the glaciers in jeeps and with
experienced guides.
On Vatnajökull is mountain-hotel, Jöklasel, at
an altitude of 840 m. above sea level, on Skálafellsjökull, one
of Vatnajökull's numerous glaciers, approximately 55 km west of
the fishing town of Höfn. Jöklasel is only 16 km from the main
road. The road to Jöklasel also goes to Smyrlabjargarárvirkjun
(a hydroelectric power plant). The last 6 km of the road require
vehicles with four wheel drive. The Jöklasel facilities include
a restaurant that comfortably seats 80 - 90 people and sleeping
bag accommodations for about 30 persons. The view from Jöklasel
is absolutely breathtaking as it is the highest restaurant in
Iceland.
You will certainly enjoy your meal at the Jöklasel restaurant
as you take in the magnificent view from the mountain tops to
the open Atlantic ocean. Jöklasel is the center of all glacial
activities.
We offers various excursions from 1st June -
7 September. Reservations are made for groups, minimum six persons
per group, from 15 March - 31st May and from 8th September - 15th
October.
We offer various short excursions in the vicinity
of Jöklasel, duration approximately 1.5-2 hours by jeep and 1-2.5
hours by Skidoo snowcats. There are also longer excursions within
the Vatnajökull area by snowcats, such as to Hvannadalshnúkur
(8-10 hours), to Grímsvötn (7-9 hours), and to Kverkfjöll (7-9
hours). The longer excursions (4-11 hours) must be booked in advance
and the minimum is six persons per excursion. In addition there
are special Vatnajökull tours for conference visitors with a lavish
seafood buffet served on ice blocks on the glacier. After the
meal on the glacier, those who interested in the plastic arts
have a fine opportunity to make sculptures of snow and ice.
We provide overalls designed to stand all weather
conditions, helmets and moon boots. Destinations may change due
to weather conditions.
GT-01 - from
Höfn
We take the bus from Höfn and drive uphill towards the glacier
and as we approach the building, Jöklasel (altitude 840 m), we
can admire the view before we take off for the adventure on the
glacier, a tour by Skidoo snowcat. For those who prefer enjoying
the wonders of the glacier in a more relaxed way we offer a tour
using jeeps. We proudly offer you a lunch in the Jöklasel Restaurant,
which is truly the only Mountain Restaurant in Iceland. You will
certainly enjoy your meal as you look out the windows to see the
spectacular landscape from the high Glacier to the open Atlantic
ocean. The pleasant stay on the glacier is followed by a boating
experience on the glacial lagoon Jökulsárlón. There we stop for
1-1.5 hour. After the enjoyable experience of the day we take
the bus back to Höfn.

GT-02 - from Smyrla
Smyrlabjargarárvirkjun is on the main road (route 1), 45 kilometers
from Höfn. The bus ride from there up to Jöklasel is an adventure
of its own and as you arrive at the glacier you discover the thrills
of the Skidoo snow cat ride. For those who prefer a more relaxed
way to experience the wonders of the glacier we offer a tour by
jeep. As you have finished the adventure on the glacier it only
seems appropriate to have lunch in the Jöklasel Restaurant, famous
for its magnificent view.

GT-03- from Reykjavík - flight
The flight from Reykjavík to Höfn takes approximately 50 min.
The group goes by bus from Höfn airport to Jökulsarlon
for boat excursion among the floating icebergs. The ice is more
than 1000 years old. After the iceberg show where part
of James Bond films, A View To A Kill and Die Anoter Day. The
tour travel to Jöklasel. Excursion from Jöklasel on Vatnajökull
by jeep or Skidoo snowcats, first to Miðfellsegg (alt.1345m) and
then to Grjótárbotn. The excursion is followed by a lunch at Jöklasel.
Besides the excellent meals Jöklasel offers the most magnificent
view any Icelandic restaurant can boast of. Arrival at Höfn at
around 6 PM where a bus will take you on a sightseeing tour around
Höfn, the friendly fishermen's town before the return flight to
Reykjavík.

The drive from Reykjavik to Jökulsárlón takes
about four hours. On Jökulsárlon we can take boat
excursion among the floating icebergs. It is possible
to take the excursion after the amazing glacier tour on Vatnajökull.
Then
the 4WD jeep goes to Jöklasel on Vatnajökull, followed by an
adventure excursion on the vast expanses of Europe's biggest
glacier. W e
proudly recommend that you have lunch in the Jöklasel Restaurant,
840m altitude. You will certainly enjoy your meal as you look
out of the windows to see the spectacular landscape from the
high glacier to the open Atlantic ocean. We drive back
in the evening and stop where the landscape rules.
